On-Demand Workshop

Understanding Gestalt Language Processing

2025/2026

This on-demand workshop is a recording of our live Literacy Lab webinar introducing Gestalt Language Processing (GLP), a language acquisition style commonly seen in many neurodivergent children, including autistic children, children with ADHD, and those with other developmental differences.

In this introductory session, we explore how Gestalt Language Processing differs from more traditionally described analytic language development, and what this means for the way we understand, support, and respond to children’s communication. The session offers a practical and accessible starting point for anyone wanting to build their understanding of GLP, including the implications for AAC and literacy development.

In this workshop, you will learn:

  • what Gestalt Language Processing is, and how it differs from analytic language development

  • how to begin recognising when a child may be a gestalt language processor

  • what the stages of Natural Language Acquisition (NLA) are, and how they may look in practice

  • ways to support a gestalt language processor through everyday interactions

  • key considerations when supporting a GLP who uses AAC

  • how literacy development can be supported in meaningful, accessible ways

  • where to go for further information, training, and support

This session will help participants develop a more informed, responsive, and affirming approach to supporting communication and literacy for children who may be gestalt language processors.

This package comprises a recorded 1.5 hour workshop and downloadable slides for just £5
