Introducing Literacy Landscapes

We are excited to launch Literacy Landscapes, a new initiative designed to celebrate, share and learn from the incredible work taking place in schools, trusts and organisations across the country.

Every day, educators are finding creative ways to ensure that pupils with complex needs have meaningful access to literacy. Too often, these stories remain within individual classrooms or schools. Literacy Landscapes aims to change that by providing a platform to showcase journeys, innovations, challenges and successes from across the sector.

From whole-school literacy strategies to individual pupil and classroom stories, Literacy Landscapes will highlight the many different routes schools are taking towards more inclusive literacy practice. By sharing these experiences, we hope to inspire others, spark professional discussion and build a growing body of evidence demonstrating the impact that literacy can have when expectations remain high and barriers are removed.

The project directly supports one of Teach Us Too's core objectives: sharing good practice and amplifying the voices of those committed to literacy for all.

We look forward to featuring our first Literacy Landscapes stories soon and celebrating the schools and professionals helping to make inclusive literacy a reality for every learner.

Inclusive Literacy: From Principle to Practice Returns in 2027

Following the success of our 2026 Professional Development Day at Swiss Cottage School, we are delighted to announce that Inclusive Literacy: From Principle to Practice will return in 2027.

This year's event brought together teachers, school leaders, therapists, researchers and advocates from across the country, all united by a shared belief that every child deserves meaningful access to literacy. Through inspiring keynote presentations, practical workshops and powerful examples from schools, delegates explored what inclusive literacy can look like in practice and the difference it can make to pupils with complex needs.

In 2027, we are taking the conference north to Rochdale, creating an opportunity for even more professionals to join the conversation, share practice and learn from one another.

The conference will once again focus on turning principles into practice, showcasing approaches that raise expectations, remove barriers and ensure that literacy is available to every learner.

We look forward to sharing further details about speakers, workshops and booking information over the coming months.

Transformational Tales: Be Part of the Story

Over the past year, Transformational Tales has captured powerful stories from non-speaking children and young people about the difference that reading and writing make in their lives. Each contribution provides a valuable reminder that literacy is about far more than learning to decode words on a page; it is about having a voice, building relationships, expressing ideas and participating more fully in the world around us.

To make it even easier for schools and families to get involved, we have recently simplified the project. Taking part now centres around just one question for the young person:

"What do reading and writing help you do?"

Alongside this, we have created dedicated information and implementation packs for both schools and families, containing everything needed to take part, including guidance, consent information and practical tips for recording and sharing responses.

Through AAC, eye gaze, partner-assisted scanning, alphabet boards symbols and other forms of alternative communication, non-speaking children and young people have important perspectives to share about literacy. Transformational Tales provides a platform for those voices to be heard, creating a growing collection of authentic stories that challenge assumptions, raise expectations and demonstrate why literacy matters.

Each tale strengthens the message that non-speaking children and young people should not simply be given a way to communicate today, but should also be taught the literacy skills that allow them to communicate anything they choose tomorrow.

We look forward to sharing more Transformational Tales over the coming year and showcasing the experiences, ambitions and achievements of non-speaking young people from across the country.

ProFILE Launches for Schools

We are delighted to announce the launch of ProFILE (Progressive Framework for Inclusive Literacy Education), a new planning, progress and assessment framework designed to support literacy teaching for pupils with complex needs.

Developed through a collaboration between Teach Us Too, Nexus Multi Academy Trust and Dr Sarah Moseley, ProFILE has been created to help schools make literacy learning visible, meaningful and progressive for every pupil.

Rather than focusing on labels, diagnoses or perceived limitations, ProFILE supports practitioners to identify what pupils can do, recognise small but significant steps of progress and plan purposeful next steps in reading and writing. The framework is designed to be flexible, non-linear and accessible across a wide range of ages, abilities and communication methods.

Membership provides schools with access to the full suite of ProFILE resources, including the Foundations, Milestones and Assessment Handbooks, alongside practical tools to support planning, assessment and implementation.

We are already excited to see schools beginning to join ProFILE and in turn, to strengthen their literacy provision and demonstrate progress that might otherwise go unnoticed. We look forward to welcoming many more schools into the growing ProFILE community over the coming year.

Every pupil. Visible progress. Unlimited potential.
