Executive Function

What do we mean by Executive Function?

As illustrated in the Simple View of Writing, transcription and composition are not the only cognitive skills required for writing. Executive Function involves the planning, reviewing and monitoring of transcription and composition to ensure ideas are clear, concise and, at a simple level, in order. This requires a higher-level of thinking which needs to be taught explicitly in different ways according to individual needs. One approach to this is identified by the EEF as the ‘writing process.’ This is illustrated below and can be broken down into smaller parts according to levels of development.

Each aspect of the writing process will look very different according to the needs of individual students. This will be further explored in the writing section of the curriculum.
