On-Demand Ace Emergent Writing Workshop 2025/2026
In this practical and insight-rich session, Marion Stanton explores how emergent writing can be meaningfully developed for pupils with complex needs, including those who are non-speaking or who experience significant physical or sensory barriers to traditional writing.
Drawing on classroom practice and inclusive literacy research, the workshop demonstrates how predictable chart writing and the use of alternative pencils can create authentic opportunities for pupils to participate in writing long before conventional handwriting, typing, or spelling emerge. The session focuses on building genuine authorship, choice, and engagement in the writing process.
In this workshop, you will learn:
What emergent writing can look like for pupils with complex communication, physical, or sensory needs
How predictable chart writing supports language development and authentic authorship
How alternative pencils (including AAC tools, keyboards, letterboards, and low-tech options) enable pupils to compose text without fine motor barriers
Practical ways to introduce these approaches within your classroom or setting
How to create meaningful opportunities for every learner to begin their journey as a writer
This session combines clear explanations with practical examples, offering strategies you can begin applying straight away in your own setting.
