Olivia Carter

Assistant Principal, Swiss Cottage School

We’re proud to welcome Olivia Carter as a Teach Us Too Ambassador.

Olivia brings a wealth of experience in specialist education and a deep commitment to ensuring that learners with the most complex needs are given every opportunity to communicate, participate, and succeed. Her work demonstrates the power of high expectations, personalised support, and a belief in every child's potential. As a passionate advocate for both communication and literacy, Olivia shares Teach Us Too's vision that no learner should be excluded from reading and writing because of their diagnosis, disability, or communication differences. We are thrilled to have her insight, expertise, and support as part of our ambassador community.

I am an SEN educator with 12 years’ experience, now serving as Assistant Principal at Swiss Cottage School DRC, a leading special school for pupils aged 4–19. My professional expertise is centered on the education and support of pupils with the most complex needs, with a focus on creating highly personalised, responsive approaches that promote engagement, communication, and access to learning.

I have a particular passion for Augmentative and Alternative Communication and supporting every pupil to find and use their voice. A defining moment in my career was working with a 7-year-old boy who, until that point, had no formal means of communication. After months of teaching him to use eye-gaze technology, he was able to tell people that it was his birthday and he was going to have a party. That moment crystallised my commitment to ensuring every pupil has the opportunity to communicate what matters to them.

My commitment to literacy for all was ignited early on in my teaching career by Jonathan Bryan’s work, and it remains central to my practice: I believe every child and young person can and should access literacy.

I have been leading on the development of the Literacy provision at Swiss Cottage School, creating meaningful, inclusive approaches for our most complex pupils.

I am so excited to be part of Teach Us Too and to stand with a charity that challenges low expectations and champions every child’s right to be taught to read and write.
